What is Stress Urine Incontinence (SUI)?
When there is loss of control resulting in urine leakage whenever there is increased abdominal pressure, it is know as stress incontinence. Activities such as coughing, sneezing, weight lifting increase the intra-abdominal pressure and hence urine leak.
What causes Stress Urine Incontinence (SUI)?
SUI can result from weak muscles in the pelvic floor. This can be caused after pregnancy and childbirth, menopause, pelvic surgery, obesity, chronic cough or constipation.
These weak muscles can cause the bladder to drop down into a position that prevents the urethra from closing completely. This results in leakage of urine with increased intra abdominal pressure.
What Are the Symptoms of Stress Incontinence?
The main symptom of stress incontinence is a leakage of urine at time of physical movement or activities like laughing, coughing, weight lifting, or exercises. The amount of leakage may vary from time to time and from woman to woman.
What is the treatment of SUI?
Treatment of SUI begins from lifestyle modification, bladder training and exercises.
Weight loss:Overweight and obese women are advised to reduce their weight as Stress incontinence has been linked to obesity.
Maintain a bladder diary:Record the times when you urinate without leak and when you leak urine. This gives an idea of your leakage “patterns” so that leaking can be avoided in the future by scheduling washroom visits at those times.
Bladder training:We advise you to go to the washroom every hour initially for a week and then gradually increase the time interval between two visits from one hour to one and half hour, two hours, two and half hour, three hour and so on. Once you are comfortable holding urine for 3-4 hours, you are advised to maintain it.
Kegel exercises:These are pelvic floor exercises that help to strengthen the muscles that support the bladder, urethra, uterus, and bowel.
Femilift CO2 laser:It is a novel technique with assured results for management of SUI. This is a non-invasive method with no downtime or hospital stay. The benefits of Femilift over older surgical methods makes it more widely and easily acceptable. Three sessions of Femilift at one month interval are required to achieve the desired results.
