What is Laparoscopic ovarian drilling?
Laparoscopic ovarian drilling is a surgical treatment for women suffering from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Electrocautery is used and very small parts of the ovaries are cauterized. This results in ovulation in women who fail to ovulate even after losing weight and medical management.
Ovarian drilling is done under general anesthesia with laparoscopic approach. The surgeon makes a small cut in the belly through which a small amount of carbon dioxide gas is introduced inside the abdomen followed by insertion of the laparoscope. The surgeon looks through the laparoscope at the internal organs. Surgical instruments are then inserted through side ports, which are 5 mm in length. With the help of monopolar current, ovarian drilling is carried out at 4 spots in each ovary.

After most of the laparoscopic procedures, you can go home the same day and can resume your normal activities within 24 hours. There is minimal hospital stay, faster recovery, minimal pain and least chances of infections after laparoscopic ovarian drilling.

Ovarian drilling is sometimes used for women with PCOS who fail to ovulate even after losing weight and medical management. Destroying part of the ovaries may restore regular ovulation cycles.
How Well does ovarian drilling Work?
For women who fail to ovulate even after losing weight and medical management and do not respond to treatment for pregnancy with medicine, such as clomiphene, about 50% of them may be able to become pregnant after they have ovarian drilling surgery.
