Hysteroscopic Tubal Cannulation for Blocked Tubes
Hysteroscopic Tubal Cannulation
What is Hysteroscopic tubal cannulation?
Hysteroscopic tubal cannulation is a procedure used when you have trouble getting pregnant because your fallopian tubes are blocked. It uses a specialized instrument called hysteroscope that gives a magnified view of the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes. A cannulation set is used to open the blocked tubes.
Is Tubal Cannulation Right for You?
You should get it done only if a diagnostic test clearly shows a blockage in one or both of your fallopian tubes that is the cause of your infertility. Hysteroscopic tubal cannulation is most successful when the tubal blockage is closest to your womb. For blockages that are on other end of the tubes, away from the womb, laparoscopic approach is preferred over hysteroscopic one.
Who Should Not Have Tubal Cannulation?
Tubal cannulation should be avoided if you have:
- Extensive scarring and damage in your fallopian tubes
- Severe blockage that makes it difficult for a catheter to pass through
- Genital tuberculosis and certain other infections
- Previous fallopian tube surgery
- Distal tubal blockage, when the blockage is in part of the fallopian tube that’s farthest from the uterus
So, in these conditions it is better to opt for other treatments for infertility like IVF and embryo transfer rather than going for Hysteroscopic tubal cannulation.
What are the Risks associated with Hysteroscopic tubal cannulation
Only a trained doctor should do Hysteroscopic tubal cannulation. Risks include:
- Failure of the procedure
- A tear in the fallopian tube wall
- Bleeding
- Infection
