Overview

Microneedling also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT) or percutaneous collagen induction (PCT), is a minimally invasive procedure that uses insertion of fine, short micro needles on mannual hand held device (Dermarolle) or motorized device (Dermapen), to rejuvenate your skin or hair.

How does Microneedling work?

Microneedling is a safe and effective way to induce collagen and generate new collagen. The needles on the Microneedling device creates microinjuries on your skin or scalp.These injuries turn on the healing mechanism of the body and it actively heals the treated skin or scalp by producing more collagen and elastin (these are the proteins responsible for making skin plump and fresh) and also increases the blood flow which brings a fresh supply of nutrients and accelerates the hair growth.

What is Derma pen?

Microneedling is conventionally performed by a device called “derma roller”. It is a small handheld roller like device having needles attached to it. In current times we have an improved version of derma roller, “Derma pen”, which is a handheldpen-like motorized device with needles. Derma pen has shown togive better results than dermaroller because it gives uniformity to treatment.

What happens before microneedling treatment?

Before starting with Microneedling, a local anaesthetic cream will be applied on your skin for 30-45 minutes. This will make the procedure comfortable for you. This step is not performed while treating the scalp.

What do I expect during the microneedling treatment?

Your skin will be cleansed first. Then your doctor will induce microinjuries on your skin or scalp with the help of the Microneedling device. Multiple passes will be made on each portion of skin/scalp to ensure optimum and even coverage. You may feel mild stinging sensation or pinching sensation during the procedure. Your doctor may apply a skin or hair serum in between and after Microneedling. This will ensure that the product reaches deep into the skin/scalp trough microchannels created by the thin needles.

Microneedling is often combined with PRP therapy to enhance the results. PRP or Platelet-rich plasma is a concentrate of platelet-rich protein that has been harvested from the patient’s own blood by using the centrifugation technique. Platelets are cells present in blood that help in tissue repair and growth of new cells. When skin is treated with PRP, it promotes tissue regeneration and collagen growth. This leads to skin tightening, smoothing and brightening. It improves the skin tone and texture and refines pore size and gives an overall healthy and rejuvenated look. Platelets are also known to be a reservoir of growth factors that stimulate tissue recovery by increasing blood flow and cytokines. When the scalp is treated with PRP, it enhances hair follicle function and improves hair density and quality and decreases hair fall.PRP is injected into the treatment area with an insulin syringe.

How long does Microneedling take to heal?

Post procedure a calming serum is applied on your skin and hair. You will also be given a sunscreen to apply before you step out of the clinic. You may feel mild pain when effect of anaesthetic wears off, but this is generally well tolerated. Your skin will be a bit red and swelled, but this will all subside completely in 24-48 hours. You may ice the treated area after few hours, to relieve the discomfort on the day of treatment. You must wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen prescribed by your doctor everyday (and repeat it every 3-4 hours), to protect your skin and minimise any possibility of adverse effects.

Does Microneedling really work?

Yes, microneedling creates microchannels in skin which initiate process of new collagen synthesis which help in improving scars, open pores, fine wrinkles and tightening of skin. Extent of improvement may vary patient to patient depending on severity of skin concern and skin type.

How many sessions of Microneedling do you need?

As the treatment works on collagen rejuvenation and tissue recovery, it can take up to 6 weeks for complete improvement. Though results begin to show 3-4 weeks after the treatment and continue to improve with time. 2 -3 treatments are recommended in a gap of 1 month for optimum results, though depending on your lifestyle and condition of your skin and hair, you may require more sessions.

How long do the results last?

With 3-4 treatments, along with medical therapy and a healthy lifestyle, results can last up to a year. Though maintenance treatments may be required in some cases.

Are there any risks involved?

As with all aesthetic procedure, there is always a possibility of side effects, but these are virtually negligible at an expert hand. If post procedure plan was not followed as per instructions sometimes redness or hyperpigmentation may develop that resolves on its own in 15-20 days.
